Five Stocks to Watch for Ira Sohn
On Wednesday, several prominent money managers will speak at the Ira Sohn investment conference. Bill Ackman, David Einhorn, Jeff Gundlach, and John Paulson are all scheduled to speak, as well as 10 others.
Traders should watch Benzinga tomorrow, as we will be providing real-time coverage of the event.
Herbalife (NYSE: HLF) could see the greatest move from Ira Sohn. On the company's recent earnings call, Greenlight's Einhorn questioned the company's executives. That led to a selloff in the stock. Shares have still not recovered. Einhorn could use his speaking slot to present a short thesis on the company, which could lead the stock down further still. However, if Einhorn fails to mention the name, shares could rapidly recover to the upside.
Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) is a huge name and probably won't see any significant movement from Ira Sohn. However, in a recent presentation, Jeff Gundlach stated that if he was a younger hedge fund manager, he would short Apple on the thesis that, with Jobs gone, the company is doomed in the longer-term. If Gundlach touches on that, Apple might see some minor weakness, which could affect the positions of traders playing Apple options.
Canadian Pacific (NYSE: CP) is currently in a proxy fight with Bill Ackman's Pershing Square. Incidentally, Ira Sohn falls one day before Canadian Pacific's shareholders' meeting. On Thursday, Canadian Pacific holders will vote on Ackman's slate of nominees to replace current Canadian Pacific directors. Ackman could use Ira Sohn to continue to pitch his vision for Canadian Pacific.
The Hartford Group (NYSE: HIG) has been targeted by Paulson, who pushed for the spinoff of the property & casual division. Paulson could touch on the company during Ira Sohn. However, it has been a few of months since Paulson has focused on influencing the company publicly, and he could move on to other topics.
Green Mountain Coffee (NASDAQ: GMCR) sold off following the company's last earnings report. That move validated Einhorn's short position in the name. Einhorn gave an extensive presentation on his short thesis last year, and thus it may be unlikely that any new information is presented on Wednesday. Still, any comment could lead to a move in Green Mountain shares, as the stock is a popular momentum play.
